The FDA has approved (December 15, 2004) a new medication, LUNESTA (eszopiclone), for the treatment of Sleep Disorder.  It is effective in helping people fall asleep as well as in helping to maintain sleep throughout the night.

Unlike existing sleep medications, LUNESTA has been shown to be uniquely effective and safe for the LONG-TERM management of sleep disorders.  Thus LUNESTA fills a huge need in treating sleep disorders, since other medications are only indicated for the short-term management of sleep disorders, generally two weeks or less.

Some key advantages of LUNESTA include:

1 -  A new type of sleep medication that is not a benzodiazepine.

2 -  Effective and safe for the LONG-TERM management of sleep disorders.

3 -  Has been extensively tested and proven highly effective for both sleep initiation and maintenance.

4 -  Flexible dosing available (1mg - 2mg - 3mg tablets) to accommodate individual patient needs.

5-   Safe in the elderly.

As with all medications there are potential side effects and other medical considerations to be evaluated prior to and during medication treatment.  It is essential to consult with a psychiatrist, or other physician, knowledgeable about Sleep Disorder and related medical and psychiatric conditions.

LUNESTA is marketed in the US by Sepracor
