The Problem

"Daytime Sleepiness" has become a frequent problem in our society.   There are many causes, ranging from lifestyle to medical conditions.  The most common lifestyle issue is a lack of sleep and an accumulating sleep deficit.  This is discussed more fully in the section:  "SLEEP."

Among the medical problems associated with "Daytime Sleepiness" are Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Narcolepsy.

Finally, "Daytime Sleepiness" can be the result of an untreated psychiatric disorder, most commonly major depression, but this category also includes dysthymic disorder, and other psychiatric disorders.

With increasing age, sleep frequently becomes less consistent, with frequent naps during the day, poor sleep at night, and a general tiredness during much of the day.  However, it is also true that, with advancing age, depression and lifestyle issues become more problematic and these factors must be evaluated and treated.

Treatment And a New Medication

Fortunately with proper diagnosis and treatment, "Daytime Sleepiness" often resolves.  In addition to behavioral treatments there are effective medications, including antidepressants, stimulants, and a relatively new medication, modafinil.   This latter medication has proven effective in both its official indication, narcolepsy, and also for "Daytime Sleepiness" when it accompanies other disorders.
